Dovremo tornare….
As in all respected stories, Mont-Saint-Michel was born from an apparition: that of the archangel Michael, who came to order Aubert, bishop of Avranches, to build an oratory on Mount Tombe, which then seems to have risen in the middle of a forest. The oratory was built in 710. In 713, the pope donated many relics to the oratory. In 725, after completing his mission, Aubert died. In the centuries that followed, the surrounding lands lowered, leaving the mountain isolated between the waters. Nonetheless, it continued to be a pilgrimage destination, and the modest chapel became the magnificent abbey that can still be seen today. Every year, more than 3 million visitors make this small rock, between Normandy and Brittany, one of the most visited places in France. The most surprising thing is that a small community of monks still remains at the center of this human tide. Expelled from the mountain during the revolution, the Benedictines returned there in 1969. Since June 2001, the Benedictines have withdrawn to make way for a small monastic community in Jerusalem.
The charm of this island at the mouth of the Couesnon river, beyond the historical facts, is that when the tides come with their maximum flow, it becomes an island surrounded by water. I went there at an unfavorable time and before the mega intervention that made Mont St. Michel return to an island at high tide. In fact, before the sandy deposits carried by the river were filling the bay and so the tide no longer reached the mountain.
We will have to go back….
