Spiagge - Beaches

Quando si parla di spiagge della normandia il pensiero va subito a Omaha Beach.

Una costa stupenda: per decine di chilometri, intere distese di sabbia chiara, di cui tutti conoscono le immagini, punteggiate qua e là da impressionanti scogliere di calcare. Sono spiagge di sogno che i tedeschi, poco curanti di preoccupazioni ecologiche, tentarono di affondare nel cemento: a questi bellissimi luoghi fanno ormai compagnia centinaia di casematte e altre batterie ritenute idonee a impedire lo sbarco delle forze alleate.

Qui si svolsero furibonde battaglie per la liberazione dell’Europa, con momenti di eroismo degni dei poemi medievali, come la famosa conquista della pointe du Hoc, con prodezze tecniche incredibili, come la costruzione del porto artificiale di Arromanches, e con catastrofi militari, come l’ecatombe dei soldati americani a Omaha Beach.

Le spiagge immense della Cote de Nacre hanno conservato, dopo più di 50 anni dallo Sbarco, le loro cicatrici: crateri di bombe, blocchi di cemento armato, ripari sotterranei inespugnabili ... Alcuni carri armati alleati, tirati fuori dall’acqua, sono stati trasformati in monumenti gloriosi. Ancora più eloquenti, pur rimanendo mute, sono le tombe di decine di migliaia dei caduti di entrambi i campi. La sabbia, ripulita dai resti delle battaglie, i bunker trasformati in musei e le città ricostruite non hanno più molto a che vedere con quei terribili giorni della nostra storia; ma i cimiteri ci ricordano l’essenziale: esseri umani, non più innocenti o colpevoli di molti altri, hanno perso la vita qui perché un pugno di esaltati aveva deciso di conquistare il mondo.

Voglio poi citare le spiagge di Breville sur Mer, Coutanville con faro di pointe Agon, Arromanches les Bains ma le spiagge sono tantissime ed ognuna ha il suo fascino.

When it comes to Normandy beaches, the thought immediately goes to Omaha Beach.

A stupendous coast: for tens of kilometers, entire expanses of white sand, of which everyone knows the images, dotted here and there by impressive limestone cliffs. They are dream beaches that the Germans, careless of ecological concerns, tried to sink into concrete: these beautiful places are now accompanied by hundreds of casemates and other batteries considered suitable to prevent the landing of the allied forces.

Here furious battles for the liberation of Europe took place, with moments of heroism worthy of medieval poems, such as the famous conquest of the pointe du Hoc, with incredible technical feats, such as the construction of the artificial port of Arromanches, and with military catastrophes, such as the massacre of American soldiers in Omaha Beach.

The immense beaches of the Cote de Nacre have retained their scars after more than 50 years from the Landing: bomb craters, reinforced concrete blocks, impregnable underground shelters ... Some Allied tanks, pulled out of the water, have been transformed into glorious monuments. Even more eloquent, while remaining silent, are the graves of tens of thousands of the fallen from both camps. The sand, cleaned of the remains of the battles, the bunkers transformed into museums and the rebuilt cities no longer have much to do with those terrible days in our history; but the cemeteries remind us of the essential: human beings, no more innocent or guilty than many others, lost their lives here because a handful of exalted people had decided to conquer the world.

Then I want to mention the beaches of Breville sur Mer, Coutanville with Pointe Agon lighthouse, Arromanches les Bains but the beaches are many and each has its own charm.
